Healthcare Committee Plans
Alan Axelrod and Robin Alexander from Princeton Health Care Systems attended the meeting.
They began the discussion by talking about past events, such as the large health fair connected with the Harvest Festival and services which have been offered at different Korean Churches such as blood pressure test, glucose test, etc.
Because past events have not been very successful, they expressed great interest in attempting to assess how they can better reach out to the Korean community.
For the future:
Need to determine what the best venue to get better attendance is.
Need to develop grassroots movement
Both Alan Axelrod and Robin Alexander expressed interest in being part of the Healthcare Committee. They are particularly interested in exploring what are the problems and needs of the Korean community. For example, they are interested in learning about and providing the soup that Korean women eat after giving birth.
Would like to find a source for contributions for flu vaccines – asked if that is something the KCCP would provide
Suggested pastors could make announcements about Health Fairs and smaller events.
Need ideas about what will “sell” – screenings for different kinds of cancers, vaccines, etc.
Alan Axelrod and Robin Alexander expressed interest in providing help both to the Healthcare Committee and to promote the KCCP.
A discussion followed Alan Axelrod’s and Robin Alexander’s presentation.
Questions were raised about how to publicize what the Princeton Health Care System would be doing.
Robin Alexander said that this could be done in conjunction with the Women’s Club. For example, there could be a program on healthy eating which could provide information along with a food tasting component. The event could focus on healthy eating and healthy food based around Korean food and cuisine. This could be done at the hospital. Alan Axelrod suggested that the Hamilton YMCA could be used and that the Speaker’s Bureau could be utilized to provide publicity. He pointed out that food events tend to get a good turnout.
There was a discussion about whether this sort of event should replace the annual flu event.
The issue of finances was raised and a concern about finances was expressed. Must decide how to prioritized activities.
Alan Axelrod said that the Princeton Health Care System can underwrite some of the cost. He suggested that it is a good idea to have something fun as the first event.
It was pointed out that many of the Korean churches have a flu clinic so that they might not be interested in a flu clinic given by the KCCP. But many expressed interest in having a broader health fair in which there not only would be flu shots available but also screening for high blood pressure and high cholesterol. If this event is held, it would have to be done in the fall. The KCCP could provide money for the flu shots so that it could be provided as a service.
At the end of the discussion, there was a consensus for having a flu shot day along with a health fair in November which will include screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol, glaucoma, h-pylori. In addition, it was suggested that a gastroenterologist could talk about stomach cancer. There was interest in having some presentations made in Korean.
Alice Yi suggested that the Women’s Club could substitute one cooking club with a healthy eating cooking demonstration and food tasting.
It was noted that the KCCP will have to find a space for the flu clinic/health fair. Because there is a problem with parking at the hospital, another place probably would be better. ETS has been very supportive of the KCCP, so that is a possibility.
Publicity could be done through churches and Korean food stores.
Alan Axelrod said that it would be good to have a healthcare newsletter. Each one could revolve around a specific issue and then there could be an event that followed that is related to that issue.
Next meeting: September 26th at Cliff and Lesley Lee’s house (73 West Shore Drive, Pennington, NJ).
