INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION:
PURPOSE: To cultivate future leadership by providing opportunities for young Asian Americans to participate in the political purpose. The intern will work in a New Jersey congressional office and participate in the legislative process.
CRITERIA:
Applicant must be of Asian-American descent.
Applicant must reside in the state of New Jersey.
Applicant must be a college student.
Applicant must demonstrate an interest in public affairs.
Applicant must have good oral and written communication skills.
Applicant must be committed to work for 4 consecutive weeks (between June 13, 2011 – August 26, 2011) in the New Jersey office of one of the following:
Stefanie A. Brand, Acting Public Advocate, Trenton
State Assemblyman Upendra Chivukula, Franklin Township
Mayor Shing-Fu Hsueh, West Windsor Township
State Senator Tom Kean Jr., Westfield
Assemblywomen Charlotte Vandervalk, Westwood
State Senator Loretta Weinberg, Teaneck
Applicant must be present at the OCA-NJ Asian American Heritage Luncheon to be held at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, June 12, 2011 at Mikado 23 Sushi and Seafood Buffet Restaurant, Wayne, NJ. (GPS user – enter 40 Riverlawn Drive, Wayne, NJ 07470).
A STIPEND OF $1,000 WILL BE AWARDED UPON THE COMPLETION OF THE INTERNSHIP.

Essay Topic:
Jeremy Lin of the New York Knicks has suddenly emerged as one of the most celebrated members of his team as well as a dynamic young player in the NBA. Many have labeled him as one of the most influential Chinese Americans. In what ways has he been an influential force for Asian Americans? You might also want to discuss the role and treatment of Asian Americans in the mainstream media. In your final paragraphs state how he has personally influenced you in your life.
